Pursuing Excellence
I'm excited to learn better methods for keeping my own goals... I may have already blown it on a New Year's resolution or two! :)
Please come, and invite other sisters in the ward to attend too, especially those who are new! This will be a great way for us to get to know each other better and become stronger as a Relief Society.
Again, here are the activity details:

DIY Pinata
Things you will need
-
punch balloons or regular balloons
-
scissors
-
tissue paper
-
masking tape
-
newspaper
-
flour
-
water
-
a pot (to boil the water)
-
candies
Instructions
Depending on the size you wish to make your piñata, the amount of water and flour you use will vary. I used 3 cups of water and 1 ½ cups of flour for my 9 inch and about 22 cm balloon. The mixture turns into a paste that will help adhere the newspaper to the balloon.
1. Boil water and flour. Make sure to stir constantly with a whisk to avoid flour lumps.
2. Blow up your balloon to the desired size.
3. Lay your newspaper on a flat surface and apply your cooled paste with a spatula to the entire surface of the newspaper.
4. Apply the newspaper to your balloon making sure there are no air bubbles.
5. After applying the amount of layers you want, let it dry over night. If you want your piñata to be strong, the more layers you apply the better. This also means it will take longer to dry and you might want to apply more layers after your first layers have dried. Make sure you allow enough time for drying. You might want to start your piñata many days before the event.
6.You will need many pieces of tissue paper. Fold your tissue paper in an accordion style and cut both sides where it folds. Then start cutting fringes on one side.
7. Wrap masking tape around your piñata from the top all the way around the bottom until you meet at the top again. Then do it again one more time but this time on the side that does not have tape. (if you are looking down at the piñata from the top, it should look like an X) With the excess tape on the top make a loop, this is where you will hang it from.
8. Apply some of the same paste you made earlier to the bottom of your piñata.
9. Starting from the bottom and moving up, apply the fringes.
10. Cut a slit at the top of your piñata (under the fringes) big enough that candy will be able to fit through. The fringes will cover the whole.
This is just an example of the basic steps to making a piñata. If you want to add more dimension like cones or putting together a cartoon character, you need to apply the extra parts to your piñata before step 8. Cones, arms, legs, etc. can me made out of poster board or even cereal box carton. Use different size balloons to make a torso and a head. Look at other piñatas to get ideas, the possibilities are endless!

Holiday Recipe Swap
This Thursday at 7 in the Relief Society Room we will be having a Holiday Recipe/Tradition Swap. We did this last year and it was so much fun! We had caramels, divinity, cheese dips, and a bunch of other yummy foods that people love to have during the holidays. If you could make your favorite holiday food and bring the recipe we would all love to try it! The whole family is invited.
To get you even more excited, I’ll share what I’m planning on bringing – Monkey bread and a Holly Wreath. My family always had Monkey bread on Christmas morning and we would make these Holly Wreaths (like rice krispy treats but better) and deliver them secretly in the night to our friends and people in the ward every year. One year I decided to wear a scruchie made out of a bunch of bells on our delivery night. Everything went fine until it was my turn to drop off a wreath, ring the door bell and run. As soon as I started running, the bells started jingling like crazy. (Not so good for our covert operation.) My partner in crime had to hold my ponytail as we ran so that the bells wouldn’t ring and we wouldn’t be caught.
I look forward to trying all your holiday tradition foods and hearing about your traditions! See you on Thursday!

December Activity
We will be having a Relief Society activity on December 1st at 7. We are going to make these super cute felt Christmas trees. The tree will be great for children, future children or a present for another family. We need an accurate count of who wants one so that we can get the right amount of materials. Please email the RS email or comment on this post if you are able to come and make one.

Soup-er Thursday
Lasagna Soup Mary H
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon thyme
1 tablespoon firmly packed brown sugar
1 (32-ounce) box chicken broth
2 (14.5-ounce) can petite diced tomatoes
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups egg noodles
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions:
In a large pan, combine ground chuck, onion, bell pepper and garlic. Cook over medium-high heat for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until beef is browned and crumbles. Drain well. Stir in thyme, brown sugar, broth, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, and salt into cooked meat mixture. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes. Add noodles, and simmer until noodles are tender.
Optional: Preheat broiler. Ladle soup into 8 to 10 ovenproof bowls. Evenly sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Broil soups, 6-inches from heat, 3 to 4 minutes, until cheese is browned and bubbly.
Baked Potato Soup Shannon LOur next Soup Group meeting will be this Thursday the 27th at 11 am. The place and soups will be announced later.
1 Small Onion Diced
5-6 Strips of Bacon, Cooked and Crumbled
1/2 Cup Flour
5 1/2 Cups Chicken Broth
1 Teaspoon Parsley
Salt and Pepper to taste
5 Small/Medium Potatoes, Peeled and Cubed
2 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
1 Cup Sour Cream
4oz. (1/2 of a bag) Shredded Cheddar Cheese
In stock pot, dice Onions and sautee in some butter (or in left over bacon grease). When onions are soft/transparent, add Flour, Bacon, and Broth. Stir with whisk consistently and bring to a boil. Continue stirring mixture until it is thick and bubbly. Add Parsley, Salt, Pepper, Potatoes and Heavy Whipping Cream. Boil for 20 minutes or until potatoes are fork tender, stirring FREQUENTLY! (The potatoes tend to stick to the bottom of your pan if you don't!). When potatoes are tender turn heat off and stir in Sour Cream and Cheddar Cheese!
*This meal is GREAT left over and only takes ONE pot! I love it. Also, if you are a little short on Heavy Whipping Cream you can use some milk in it's place, which will make your soup a little thinner!
